Huawei: sold 10 million Mate 20 smartphones and creates its own mobile OS

Huawei is going through hard times due to pressure from the United States, which has been going on for a long time and is constantly growing. Despite a ban on the company's smartphone sales in the US market, Huawei managed to dislodge Apple from second place in global shipments last year. Now, the Chinese manufacturer has announced on Twitter that since the release of the Huawei Mate 20, it has already managed to sell more than 10 million smartphones in this series.

That's not a huge number compared to the 200 million phones the company sold in 2018, according to IDC. However, it should be borne in mind that the launch of the Mate 20 took place in October. On the other hand, Huawei has released four versions of the Mate 20, and a breakdown by model is not given. The entry-level Mate 20 Lite is presumably the most successful selling device.

One way or another, it's clear that the US smartphone market is no longer as critical for Huawei as many believe. It's certainly important, but the company can offset losses by focusing on other markets. This doesn't mean the Chinese manufacturer is completely ignoring the USβ€”it still actively collaborates with American companies. For example, in an interview with the German publication Die Welt, Huawei's CEO of consumer division, Richard Yu, named Qualcomm, Microsoft, and Google as key partners. The latter, after all, produces Android, and breaking with it can have far-reaching consequences for the business.

But the Chinese giant is striving for independence: it uses Qualcomm chips only in mid-range devices, and its own Kirin chips in more expensive models. Android While no details are being discussed yet, Mr. Yu has officially stated that the company is currently working on an independent operating system: β€œWe are creating our own OS. If it ever happens that we can no longer use existing platforms, we will be ready. This is our plan B. But, of course, we prefer to work with the Google and Microsoft ecosystems.” While the details are still unknown, rumors about a mobile OS from Huawei have been circulating since the beginning of last year. One can only assume that it will be based on Android, which is largely an open platform.
