January EMEAA Gaming Chart: GTA V, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and FIFA 20 Lead
In January 2020, more than 15 million copies of AAA games were sold in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australasia, up 1,1% year-over-year. Among them, the most popular were Grand Theft Auto V, FIFA 20, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare ΠΈ Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. In addition to this, the main console sales came from the Nintendo Switch.
Due to the end of the console cycle, gaming system sales fell 15,8% year-over-year in January, with revenue down 13,1%. The only console that sold better in January 2020 compared to 2019 was the Nintendo Switch (up more than 17%). The device accounted for almost 52% of all consoles sold at retail. The most popular among them was the neon version.
The increase in game sales was primarily due to the growing popularity of digital versions. The best-selling titles in digital stores in January were Grand Theft Auto V, FIFA 20 and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege. They sold a total of just under 8,45 million copies.
Retail game sales fell 5,6% year over year to 6,6 million copies. Historically, boxed versions of projects sell best when major new products are launched, and last month there were none. For comparison, in January 2019 they released Resident Evil 2 and Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.
When comparing retail and digital sales (including only countries for which data is available), 66% of games were downloaded, while 34% were boxed versions.
50% of all tracked games sold last month were for PlayStation 4. PC - 18,8%, Nintendo Switch - 16,3%. And finally, for Xbox One - 11,9%. The Switch's position could well have been higher if Nintendo had provided digital sales figures for its games. When it comes to boxed versions, PlayStation 4 still holds the top spot with a 47,3% share, while Switch takes second position with 32,9% and Xbox One rounds out the top three with 25,1%. It's worth noting that Xbox Game Pass data is not included in these figures.
The largest country for game sales in the monitored markets is the UK. It accounted for 16,1% of copies. It is followed by France with 14,5% and Germany with 11,8%. Additionally, the UK is the largest market for digital games (15,8%), ahead of Germany (13,3%) and Russia (13,2%). But in retail, France leads, accounting for 22,8% of all boxed editions. In second place is Spain (17,1%), in third is Great Britain (16,5%).
