Tesla CEO Elon Musk explained to users concerned about privacy issues the presence of a camera installed in the interior of an electric car, installed above the rear-view mirror.
Musk explained that the camera is designed so that the car can eventually be used as an autonomous taxi.
βThis is for when we start competing with Uber/Lyft,β the CEO tweeted in response to a question about camera privacy. βIn case someone damages your car, you can check the video.β This camera is also used for security in Sentry Mode, which is designed to monitor the surrounding environment. In case of registration near the car of any movement, the recording of what is happening from all the cameras installed in it immediately begins.
In a follow-up tweet, Musk confirmed that the rental hardware, which includes this camera, is already in current Tesla vehicles and that it is βjust a matter of completing software development and getting regulatory approval.β
Last May, Musk predicted that functionality for the company's cars that would be a mixture of "Uber Lyft and AirBnB" should be expected by the end of 2019.
The CEO added that once such functionality eventually appears in Tesla vehicles, owners will have the option to disable the interior camera. Until this happens, the camera will be permanently turned off.
