It was Microsoft who wanted to release Cuphead on the Nintendo Switch

Cuphead was recently announced for the Nintendo Switch. Prior to that, it was only available on Xbox One and PC. As it turned out, Microsoft itself suggested releasing the game on the Switch.

“It was a surprise for us too,” said MDHR studio co-founder and lead game designer Jared Moldenhauer at the Game Developers Conference 2019. “It had something to do with the fact that Nintendo and Microsoft were working on something, looking for a friendly the middle, and the overall message was that they wanted more people to learn and play games. So the number of people who can enjoy an indie game is more important than exclusivity. I don't know how it works internally, but when the opportunity came up for us [to release the game] on Switch, we agreed. This is an amazing opportunity."

Cuphead on Nintendo Switch will also be linked to Xbox Live. Moldenhauer said support for the service won't be available at launch, but will come with a later patch. Regarding the features of Xbox Live on Nintendo Switch, the game designer does not apply.

Porting the game to the Nintendo Switch also caused some difficulties. The developer had to find new ways to package all the sprites to avoid insanely long downloads. Moldenhauer also noted the support of the Nindie team, who were always quick to respond to questions from Studio MDHR.

Cuphead came out in 2017. It will release on the Nintendo Switch on April 18, 2019. The game will also receive DLC later this year.
