Canonical spam incident after installing Ubuntu on Azure cloud

One of the customers of the Microsoft Azure cloud was outraged by the disregard for privacy and personal data in Microsoft and Canonical. Three hours after installing Ubuntu on the Azure cloud, I received a message from Canonical's sales team on LinkedIn with promotional offers related to the use of Ubuntu in the enterprise. However, the message explicitly indicated that it was sent after the user had installed Ubuntu on Azure.

Microsoft said that the agreement with publishers who publish products in the Azure Marketplace implies that they share information about users who run their product in the cloud. The agreement allows the use of the received information to provide technical support, but prohibits the use of detailed contact information for marketing purposes. When connecting to Azure, the user agrees to the terms of the service.

Canonical has confirmed that it has received the contact details of the user running Ubuntu on Azure from Microsoft as part of a publisher agreement. The specified personal data was entered into the company's CRM. One of the new sales employees used the information to contact a user on LinkedIn, wording his offer incorrectly. In order to avoid such incidents, Canonical intends to review the sales organization policy and training methods for sales personnel.
