Initiative to add Unity 8 desktop and Mir display server to Debian

Mike Gabriel, involved in maintaining packages with Qt and Mate on Debian, presented an initiative to create packages with Unity 8 and Mir for Debian GNU/Linux and their subsequent integration into the distribution. Work is carried out in conjunction with the project ubportswho took over the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile platform and desktop Unity 8, after from them pulled back Canonical company. Currently, the unstable branch has already been transferred some packagesrequired to run Unity 8, including package with display server Mir.

Unity 8 uses the Qt5 library and the Mir display server, which acts as a composite server based on Wayland. In combination with the Ubuntu Touch mobile environment, the Unity 8 desktop may be in demand to implement the Convergence mode, which allows you to create an adaptive environment for mobile devices, which, when connected to a monitor, provides a full-fledged desktop and turns a smartphone or tablet into a portable workstation.
