Social network Instagram continues to increase its efforts to combat bots and accounts that are used to manipulate users of the platform. This time around, it was announced that Instagram would ask account holders who are suspected of "potentially inauthentic behavior" to verify their identity.
The new policy, according to Instagram, will not affect the majority of users of the social network, as it is aimed at checking accounts that behave suspiciously. According to reports, in addition to accounts that are seen engaging in suspicious behavior, Instagram will check the accounts of people who have a large proportion of their followers in a different country than their location. In addition, identity verification will be carried out when signs of automation are detected, which will allow bots to be calculated.
The owners of such accounts will be prompted by providing the corresponding email ID. If this is not done, then the Instagram administration may lower the rating of posts from these accounts in the Instagram feed or block them. Instagram and parent company Facebook, which owns the social network of the same name, are stepping up efforts to combat disinformation ahead of the US presidential election this year. Facebook already has similar rules in place, whereby owners of popular pages are asked to verify their identity.
Instagram has long been criticized for not doing enough to combat the spread of misinformation within the platform and the suppression of attempts to manipulate other people's opinions. Obviously, the new rules will help strengthen control over the information distributed on Instagram.
