A toolkit for removing redundant functionality from Chrome, Edge, and Firefox

The Just the Browser project is introducing a toolkit for cleaning browsers of unnecessary functionality not directly related to web navigation. The project provides scripts for reconfiguring Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox, disabling related features that often irritate users, such as working with AI services, integrating with third-party products, sending telemetry, and displaying recommended content on the new tab page. The toolkit code is written in Shell and distributed under the MIT license.

The following features have been announced to be removed from the toolkit:

  • Functionality related to generative AI models and interactions with AI services (both local and cloud), such as Copilot integration in Edge and using AI to recommend tab groupings in Firefox.
  • Shopping tools such as online price tracking and coupons.
  • Displaying third-party or sponsored content, such as sponsored site recommendations in the address bar and displaying articles when you open a new tab.
  • Typical reminders, such as pop-ups asking you to change your default browser choice.
  • Prompts shown on first launch, such as the first launch welcome screen and offers to import data from other browsers.
  • Collecting and sending telemetry.
  • Autostart options allow you to automatically open the browser after the operating system boots.
