Last week, Intel announced a new generation of Cascade Lake-X High Performance Desktop (HEDT) processors. New items differ from last year's Skylake-X Refresh by almost twice the lower cost and higher clock speeds. However, Intel claims that users will be able to increase the frequencies of the new chips themselves.
"You can overclock any of them and get some really interesting results," Mark Walton, Intel's EMEA PR manager, told PCGamesN. According to Mark, in the Intel lab, engineers managed to overclock the flagship Core i9-10980XE to a very impressive 5,1 GHz using only "standard liquid cooling". Moreover, all 18 cores of this processor reached such a considerable frequency.
However, an Intel representative immediately hurried to note that each processor can be overclocked differently, and each processor has its own maximum clock frequency. So the chip purchased by the user will not necessarily be able to reach 5,1 GHz across all cores. “Some accelerate better, some worse, but it’s still possible,” Mark summed up.
Recall that the Core i9-10980XE processor, like other members of the Cascade Lake-X family, is made according to the good old 14-nm process technology, which Intel has once again improved. This chip has 18 cores and 36 threads, its base clock speed is 3 GHz, and the maximum frequency with Turbo Boost 3.0 technology reaches 4,8 GHz. However, all 18 cores can only automatically overclock up to 3,8 GHz. That is why the statement about 5,1 GHz for all cores can be considered quite unexpected.
Cascade Lake-X processors should start shipping soon. The recommended cost of the flagship Core i9-10980XE is $979.
