Intel: laptops with flexible displays will appear no earlier than in 2 years

In two years, laptops with flexible displays may appear, an Intel executive told the Nikkei Asian Review. Yes, according to an Intel representative, after smartphones, flexible displays may also appear in laptops, but this will not happen very soon.

“Now we are at the beginning of the journey and trying to understand the possibilities and limitations of technology [flexible display — approx. ed.],” said Joshua D. Newman, Intel general manager of mobile innovation and vice president of the Client Computing Group. He also noted that Intel sees potential in folding displays, because they can give users new opportunities. And just at the moment the company is exploring such opportunities. Simply put, Intel is now trying to figure out exactly how flexible displays can be used in laptops and what it can be useful for.

At the same time, an Intel spokesman notes that flexible display technology is not perfect, and it will take at least two years to create a reliable laptop with a flexible screen. Intel is said to be exploring flexible display applications with major manufacturers including LG Display, BOE Technology Group, Sharp and Samsung Display.

A clear demonstration of the imperfection of devices with a flexible display has recently become the story of the Galaxy Fold smartphones. Recall that for some browsers who received the device before the release, the flexible display broke in just a few days of use. In fact, Intel is faced with the task of not only coming up with a reliable flexible laptop, but also explaining to users why this is needed, and why this is not just “innovation for the sake of innovation”. And Intel itself needs a laptop with a flexible display in order to provide users with something new, beyond the traditional PCs, for which demand continues to decline. That is, the company will thus try to stimulate the interest of users in computers, thereby ensuring the sale of its processors.
