Intel has clarified the situation with its departure from the 5G mobile network market. Now we know exactly why this happened. According to CEO Robert Swan, the company concluded that it had no prospects in this business after Apple and Qualcomm settled a protracted dispute. The agreement between the two meant that Qualcomm would once again supply modems to Apple.
βIn light of the Apple and Qualcomm announcement, we assessed the prospects for us to make money by delivering this technology to smartphones, and came to the conclusion that at that time we did not have such an opportunity,β Swan commented on the situation in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
Recall that the message about the departure of Intel from the 5G modem market appeared a few hours after the announcement of the reconciliation between Apple and Qualcomm. At that time, it was not clear whether Apple and Qualcomm reconciled due to the departure of Intel, which left no other options for obtaining support for iPhone 5G networks, or whether Qualcomm squeezed Intel out of this business by settling differences with the Cupertino company.
As Bloomberg reported at the time, Apple had to make concessions in a dispute with Qualcomm for the sake of the future of iPhone smartphones, as it was already clear that Intel would not cope with the task of providing its new products with 5G modems in a timely manner.
