Intel abandons 5G modem business

The fact that Intel intends to abandon the production and further development of 5G chips was announced shortly after Qualcomm and Apple decided cease further litigation due to patents by entering into several partnership agreements.

Intel has been developing its own 5G modem to supply to Apple. Before the decision was made to abandon the development of this direction, Intel faced some production difficulties that did not allow mass production of chips before 2020.

Intel abandons 5G modem business

In an official statement, the company says that despite the obvious prospects that open up with the advent of 5G networks, there is no clear clarity in the mobile business about which strategy will give a positive result and stable profits. It is also reported that Intel will continue to fulfill current commitments to customers regarding existing solutions for smartphones with 4G. The company has decided to stop producing 5G modems, including those that were scheduled to hit the market next year. Intel representatives refrain from commenting on the question of when the decision was made to stop developing the direction (before the agreement between Qualcomm and Apple or after that).

Intel's decision to phase out 5G modems allows Qualcomm to become the sole chip supplier for future iPhones. As for Intel, the company intends to provide more information about its own 5G strategy in the next quarterly report, which will be published on April 25.
