Intel Corporation announced the purchase of Linutronix, a company that develops technologies for using Linux in industrial systems. Linutronix also oversees the development of the RT branch of the Linux kernel (“Realtime-Preempt”, PREEMPT_RT or “-rt”), aimed at use in real-time systems. The post of technical director at Linutronix is ​​held by Thomas Gleixner, the main developer of the PREEMPT_RT patches and maintainer of the x86 architecture in the Linux kernel.

It is noted that the purchase of Linutronix reflects Intel's commitment to supporting the Linux kernel and the associated community. Intel will provide the Linutronix team with more capabilities and resources. Following completion of the transaction, Linutronix will continue to operate as an independent business within Intel's software division.
