Intel Launches Virtual Internship Program Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

Intel has announced the launch of the Virtual 2020 Intern Program. Sandra Rivera, executive vice president and director of human resources at Intel, noted in a company blog post that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of Intel's employees have moved to a virtual workspace to limit the spread of the virus.

Despite this, the company is adopting new ways of working, collaborating and maintaining social connection among team members. The goal of the new program is to create an inclusive learning environment where interns do meaningful work with visible impact and where they can create virtual communities across the company.

β€œThe new members of our team, our 2020 Summer Intern class, will have a fresh experience with the launch of our Virtual 2020 Internship Program. While we would like to welcome them on site on our campuses around the world, we are committed to ensuring that the new program format provides a unique and a memorable experience for each of them,” said Rivera.

Each participant will be given the opportunity to form close connections with others and a safe space to work, learn and exchange ideas. Interns will be offered a wide range of opportunities, from gaining business and technical skills, to joining a virtual team to get to know their colleagues better, as well as a variety of online simulations and exercises.

The company will encourage interns to expand their knowledge base, set personal and professional goals, connect with mentors, and interact with Intel leaders on divisional teams. Sandra Rivera noted that for some types of internships, the remote approach does not work properly. In these cases, work will be delayed until interns can safely reside directly on Intel campuses.
