Internet balloons Alphabet Loon spent more than a million hours in the stratosphere

Loon, an Alphabet subsidiary created to bring Internet access to rural and remote areas using stratosphere balloons, has announced a new achievement. The company's balloons have been drifting at an altitude of about 1 km for more than 18 million hours, covering about 24,9 million miles (40,1 million km) in this time.

The technology for providing the population of hard-to-reach regions of the planet with the help of balloons has already passed the testing stage. Earlier this month, the company announced plans to launch "Internet in Balloons" in Kenya, a nation in East Africa, in conjunction with Telkom Kenya, the country's third-largest mobile operator, soon.

Recall that in 2017, Loon balloons helped restore mobile communications in Puerto Rico, which suffered from the consequences of Hurricane Maria.
