2019 iPhone and iPad Pro will feature new antennas to improve call quality

Apple intends to use a new antenna made using MPI (Modified PI) technology in many devices of the 2019 model range. The developer currently uses liquid crystal polymer (LCP) antennas found in the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR smartphones. This was stated by TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

2019 iPhone and iPad Pro will feature new antennas to improve call quality

The analyst says current liquid crystal polymer technology limits the radio frequency performance of antennas, making them difficult to use in high-frequency cellular bands. He also notes that the transition to new technology will increase the cost and performance of new gadgets, the announcement of which is expected in the fall of this year.

While switching to MPI technology for new antennas is a no-brainer for Apple, Kuo believes LCP will remain the primary material used in 5G antennas for the 2020 iPhone. He believes that by then the manufacturer will be able to resolve the RF performance limitations of LCP-based antennas.

The analyst also expects Apple to begin using LCP material in future iPad models that will hit the market starting in the fourth quarter of 2019. He previously mentioned that the new 11-inch iPad Pro model would go on sale in the fourth quarter of this year. In addition, a new iPad Pro with a 2020-inch display is expected to launch in early 12,9. According to Kuo, the new iPad Pro models will be equipped with flexible printed circuit boards, the creation process of which uses LCP technology.
