Artificial intelligence helped Twitter reach millions of users

At the end of 2019, the number of Twitter users was 152 million people - this figure was published in the company's report for the fourth quarter. The number of daily users increased from 145 million in the previous quarter and from 126 million in the same period a year earlier.

Artificial intelligence helped Twitter reach millions of users

This significant increase is reportedly due in large part to the use of improved machine learning models that place tweets of more interest to users in feeds and notifications. Twitter notes that this is achieved by increasing the relevance of the materials.

By default, Twitter displays a feed to users, where priority is given to those records that, according to the algorithms, will be of most interest to them. For users who follow multiple accounts, the system also displays the marks and replies of the people they follow. In Twitter notifications, tweets are highlighted in the same way, even if the user missed them in their timeline.

Twitter is working hard to allay investors' fears of a declining user base. Monthly statistics on this criterion were decreasing throughout 2019, which forced the company to stop publishing these figures altogether. Instead, Twitter is now reporting the number of daily users, as it looks a lot more rosy.

However, compared to many competing services, Twitter still has a lot of room to grow. Snapchat, by comparison, reported 218 million daily users in the last quarter of last year. And Facebook reported 1,66 billion over the same time period.

The last reporting quarter was also special because for the first time in the history of the company, it brought in more than $1 billion in revenue in three months: $1,01 billion compared to $909 million in the fourth quarter of 2018. In addition, Twitter previously stated that its advertising revenue could have been significantly higher were it not for technical errors that limited the use of personalized ads and data sharing with partners. The company said at the time that it had taken steps to correct the issues, but did not say whether they had been fully resolved. Twitter has now clarified that it has since made the necessary corrections.
