Study: which fitness trackers are deceiving their owners

On the eve of the famous London Marathon, held annually since 1981, Which? published a list of fitness trackers that are the least accurate in determining the distance traveled. The leader of the anti-rating was Garmin Vivosmart 4, the error of which was 41,5%.

Study: which fitness trackers are deceiving their owners

The Garmin Vivosmart 4 has been found to significantly underestimate a runner's score. While he actually covered 37 miles, the gadget showed 26,2 miles. Samsung Gear S2 showed itself slightly better, which was wrong by 38%, also in the direction of reducing the real distance. In general, most of the most inaccurate fitness trackers underestimated the results of the marathon runners who tested them, with the exception of the Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS) and Huawei Watch 2 Sport, which added 13 and 28% to the real distance, respectively.

At the same time, the experts of Which? noted that the accuracy of fitness trackers does not depend on the manufacturer. The publication gave several vivid examples demonstrating that products of the same brand can show a different level of error. For example, Garmin, which led the anti-rating, had a Vivoactive 3 model, which produced a 100% accurate result. Apple, which also made the list of the most inaccurate fitness trackers, released the Watch Series 1, which overestimated the distance traveled by only 1%.
