Samsung announces that the Galaxy S20 series smartphones will be the first to implement an innovative electronic identification (eID) solution that can essentially replace traditional ID cards.

Thanks to the new system, Galaxy S20 owners will be able to securely store identity documents directly on their mobile device. In addition, eID will simplify the process of issuing digital identities by authorities.

The solution has already been tested in a joint pilot project with the German Federal Office for Information Security (BIS), Bundesdruckerei (bdr) and Deutsche Telekom Security GmbH. To implement the project, the partners developed a unified architecture based on the foundation of the smartphone security system β€” its hardware. The chip embedded in the device allows information to be stored locally and gives users complete control over sensitive data.

Users can request the creation of an eID electronic card using only a smartphone. After the organization responsible for its creation confirms the request, the eID will be automatically stored and isolated in a secure location on the device. The system uses end-to-end encryption. Only the company issuing the identifier and the authorized device will be able to access the user's personal data.

Initially, the eID application will be available to German citizens: the solution will be implemented by the end of this year. It will be possible to store driver's licenses, health insurance cards and other documents electronically on a smartphone.
