Damage to undersea internet cables in the Red Sea has reduced traffic between Asia and Europe

Reports of damage to telecommunications cables running under the Red Sea emerged on Monday, AP News reported, citing official sources. Some experts blame this on the Yemeni Houthis, who periodically shell ships passing the Yemeni coast, but they deny these accusations. According to the Hong Kong company HGC Global Communications, the Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1), Europe India Gateway (EIG), as well as Seacom and TGN-Gulf cables, which in this case are a single cable system, were damaged. HGC Global Communications said the damage affected 25% of traffic passing through the Red Sea. HGC rerouted some traffic to Europe via mainland China and the United States.
