Janayugom is the first newspaper in the world to switch completely to open source

Janayugom is the world's first newspaper to go completely open source

janayugom is a daily newspaper published in the state of Kerala (India) in the Malayalam language and has about 100,000 subscribers.

Until recently, they used the proprietary Adobe PageMaker, but the age of the software (the last release was already in 2001), as well as the lack of Unicode support, prompted management to look for alternatives.

After discovering that the industry-standard Adobe InDesign required a monthly subscription instead of a one-time license, which the newspaper couldn't afford, management turned to the local Printing Institute. There they were advised to open Scribus, and also attracted several people from Indian community free software.

As a result, our own distribution kit was created Janayugom GNU/Linux based on Kubuntu, including proprietary alternatives such as Scribus, Gimp, Inkscape, Krita, Shotwell.

Three fonts are being developed (one has already been completed) supporting the full Malayalam alphabet. Created Janayugom Edit to allow you to open existing PageMaker files to completely avoid using Windows.

More than 100 employees of the newspaper completed a five-day training: the first day to get acquainted with the stack and the work process, the second day - work with GIMP and Inkscape, the remaining three days - Scribus. Separate trainings were also held for photographers and system administrators.

Starting from October 2 (150 years since the birth of Mahatma Gandhi), all editions of the newspaper fully use the free stack for the preparation and layout of the material. After a month of successful work, the achievement was publicly announced by the head of the government of Kerala.

Following the example of Janayugom, the Academy of Journalism organized a two-day seminar with representatives of local newspapers to explore the possibilities and benefits of using free software.
