JOLED Starts Building Factory for Final Assembly of Printed OLED Screens

Japan's JOLED intends to be among the first companies to mass-produce OLED screens using inkjet technology. In contrast to the already mastered technology of OLED production using vacuum deposition using stencils (masks), inkjet printing is more economical, faster and cheaper. JOLED is already producing some commercial batches of OLED displays using inkjet technology, but there is still a lot of work to be done to truly mass-produce inkjet OLEDs.

Last June, JOLED announced that OLED inkjet printing lines on 5.5Γ—1300mm 1500G wafers would be deployed at the company's Nomi plant. This plant is currently under reconstruction. It was purchased from Japan Display, one of the shareholders of JOLED. The Nomi plant will begin commercial production in 2020. The planned capacity of the plant is 20 substrates per month. The final assembly of the displays will take place at another facility. This site will be the JOLED plant in Chiba, according to a recent press release from the company.

Formally, the construction of the plant in Chiba started on April 1. The plant will cover an area of 34 m000 and will be able to produce up to 2 OLED screens from 220 to 000 inches per month. These will be both displays for cars and displays for premium monitors. Commissioning of the plant in Tiba is scheduled for 10. The money for the JOLED enterprise was allocated by shareholders represented by INCJ, Sony and Nissha. The amount of financial assistance amounted to 32 billion yen ($2020 million). With Nissha, JOLED also intends to build a manufacturing relationship. The first specializes in thin-film touch sensors, which will find the widest application in JOLED products.

JOLED does not specify which raw materials and technologies it will use for OLED inkjet printing. It can be expected that Sony, as one of the founders of JOLED, became the technology donor. But the supplier of raw materials may be LG Chem. In any case, she counts on it.
