Ford aims to increase its fleet of self-driving cars to 2019 units by the end of 100 and to begin testing them in another city as the company ramps up its deployment of autonomous technology. This was announced to investors by Ford CEO Jim Hackett during the summing up of the company's work for the first quarter of 2019.
Hackett said Ford will now focus on testing in "more challenging" conditions with seasonal weather changes and "intense" meteorological fluctuations, instead of testing in suburban areas where traffic conditions are more stable.
Speaking earlier this month at the Detroit Economic Club, Hackett acknowledged that the automaker was too ambitious in its plans to quickly scale up efforts to develop autonomous driving technology. He reiterated that Ford aims to launch a fleet of self-driving cars in 2021, but noted that it is likely to be "limited" as the rollout of self-driving technology remains a difficult issue to address.
