What features Microsoft stopped developing or removed in the May update of Windows 10 (2004)

Microsoft these days started full deployment Major May Update for Windows 10 (version 2004). As usual, the build comes with a bunch of new features like Windows Subsystem for Linux 2, the new Cortana app, and so on. There are many known issueswhich the company will try to eliminate soon. And now Microsoft has published a list of features that are deprecated or have been removed in the new OS release.

It's not a particularly large list, unlike some of the past updates, but still. Here's what the company considers deprecated (these features are still part of the OS, but are no longer being actively developed):

Function

Details

 Companion Device Framework

The toolkit is no longer under active development.

 Microsoft Edge

The outdated version of Microsoft Edge on its own engine is no longer being developed.

 Dynamic Disks

The dynamic disks feature is no longer under development. It will be fully replaced by Storage Spaces in the next release of Windows 10.

The Companion Device Framework acted as a way to communicate with external devices like the Microsoft Band to log into Windows 10 (apparently, this technology never gained popularity). With regard to the browser, the decision is quite natural due to the transition of Edge to the Chromium engine.

And here is what Microsoft completely removed from Windows 10 (2004):

 Function

 Details

 Cortana

Personal Assistant was updated and improved in the Windows 10 May Update. However, with the new changes, some non-Microsoft consumer features like music, connected home, and more are no longer available.

Windows To Go

The feature (launching Windows 10 in a custom workspace, such as a keychain) was deprecated in Windows 10 (1903) and removed in this release.

Mobile Plans and Messaging Apps

Both applications are still supported, but are now distributed differently. OEMs can now include these applications in Windows images for devices with built-in cellular connectivity. In PC builds, these apps are removed.

So Cortana has been replaced with a new app in this update. Integrating the mobile plans feature really makes little sense on most PCs, and the Messaging app has been completely useless for years. Skype in the early days of Windows 10 was split into three applications: Messaging, Phone, and Skype Video. This practice was short-lived: in the end, Skype again turned into one application. Skype Video and Phone were removed, and Messaging remained a useless add-on.
