Kali Linux 2020.2

Despite the turmoil in the world, we are excited to bring you the amazing Kali Linux 2020.2 update! It is already available for download - https://www.kali.org/downloads/.

Brief overview of the changes:

  • Changing the look of KDE Plasma and the login screen
  • PowerShell by default
  • Improvements in Kali ARM
  • New packs and icons
  • Redesigned installer
  • Infrastructure improvement

Changing the look of KDE Plasma and the login screen

Our Xfce and GNOME have a redesigned Kali Linux look and feel, and now it's time to go back to our roots (backtrack-linux) and give KDE Plasma a little more attention, with new themes, light and dark.

We have also redesigned the login screen. It also has a light and dark theme, and the input fields have been aligned.

PowerShell by default

Some time ago we added PowerShell to the repository. now we have put PowerShell directly into one of our main metapackages - kali-linux-large. However, it is still missing from the default metapackage (kali-linux-default).

Improvements in Kali ARM

Following the x86 images, we have deprecated login:root pass:toor in our ARM images. Instead, they are now login:kali pass:kali.

SD card requirement is now 16 GB and above.

We no longer install locales-all, so we recommend running sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales and then logging out and back in.

Redesigned installer

Often, users marked all DEs for installation in the installer, and were surprised when the installation took too long. At the same time, many packages were downloaded from the network, which slowed down the process even more.

What solution?

  • We have removed kali-linux-everything as an option in the installer.
  • We have added all packages from kali-linux-large to the installer.

New packs and icons

  • GNOME 3.36
  • Joplin
  • NextNet
  • Python 3.8
  • Spider Foot

Since many tools still need python2, we have returned it to the repository. Developers, please look into porting your tools to Python 3.

We have also started updating the icons for each tool - https://www.kali.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/release-2020.2-icons.png

wslconf

WSLconf took place this year, and steev (https://twitter.com/steevdave) gave a 35-minute talk on "How We Use WSL in Cali" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8m6tKErjAI

Infrastructure improvement

We have several new servers!

Kali Linux NetHunter

  • Nexmon support has been returned
  • OpenPlus 3T images are out
  • We've added over 160 different cores, allowing NetHunter to support over 64 devices!
  • Documentation update - https://www.kali.org/docs/nethunter/
