Debian 11 "Bullseye" installer release candidate

The release candidate for the installer for the next major Debian release, “Bullseye,” has been published. The release is expected in the summer of 2021. Currently, there are 185 critical errors blocking the release (a month ago there were 240, three months ago - 472, at the time of freezing in Debian 10 - 316, Debian 9 - 275, Debian 8 - 350, Debian 7 - 650). The final release of Debian 11 is expected in the summer.

Key changes in the installer compared to the third alpha release:

  • The eatmydata package is included, which allows you to speed up the installation of packages by disabling fsync (dpkg very often calls fsync during installation, which leads to delays).
  • The graphical installer now builds with libinput instead of the evdev driver, which improves touchpad support. Support for libwacom has been removed, functionality of which is now provided by the libinput package.
  • The Linux kernel has been updated to release 5.10.
  • The iso images include the wireless-regdb-udeb and libinih1-udeb packages.
  • The list-devices-linux package adds support for disk partitions on USB UAS devices.
  • Grub2 adds support for the SBAT (UEFI Secure Boot Advanced Targeting) mechanism, which solves certificate revocation problems for UEFI Secure Boot.
  • Removed the restriction on the maximum length of lines in the Packages and Sources files.
  • The bonding driver has been added to udeb nic-modules, and efivars has been removed from efi-modules.
  • Work has been done to reduce the amount of memory consumed.
  • Added detection of Microsoft operating systems on ARM64 platforms to os-prober.
  • partman-btrfs provides minimal support for subpartitions for the root directory.
  • Allows the use of an underscore in the username specified for the first account.
  • Added support for ARM boards puma-rk3399, Orange Pi One Plus, ROCK Pi 4 (A,B,C), Banana Pi BPI-M2-Ultra, Banana Pi BPI-M3.
  • A new Homeworld theme has been introduced.
