After four months of development, the 6.6 desktop environment has been released. KDE Plasma.
Plasma 6.6 is all about making life as easy as possible without sacrificing flexibility.
New Features
- Users who prefer to customize the appearance of their environment can now transform their current configuration into a new global theme! This custom global theme even supports switching between day and night modes (screenshot 1).
- A more subtle way to change the appearance of applications is to adjust the color intensity of each window (screenshot 2).
- Choosing a skin tone for emoji (accessed by pressing Meta+) is now easier with the new skin tone selector.
- One of the key development areas for Plasma 6.6 was speeding up common operations. For example, if the system has a camera, you can now quickly connect to a new Wi-Fi network simply by scanning a QR code.
- In the taskbar, when you hover the pointer over the icon of any application that plays sound, you can adjust the volume by scrolling the mouse wheel.
- Into the control List of windows parameter added Open on hoverYou can also hide windows that are not related to the current desktop or activity.
- Holding down the Alt key and double-clicking on a file or directory on the desktop opens the Properties window.
Special abilities
- To ensure everyone can use Plasma comfortably, accessibility features have been significantly improved across all components. If you have color vision impairments, please check out the filters on the page. Special abilities in the application System parameters, in section Correction for color blindnessPlasma 6.6 adds a new Grayscale filter – four filters are now available for different types of color blindness.
- In the area of improvements for users with visual impairments, the function Zoom and magnifying glass received a new tracking mode that always keeps the pointer in the center of the screen.
- Additionally, support has been added for Wayland's Slow Keys and the standardized Reduce Motion accessibility setting.
Screenshots and screen recording
- Spectacle can now recognize and extract text from processed images. This simplifies, among other things, the creation of alternative text for visually impaired users (screenshot 3).
- It is also possible to exclude windows from being recorded by selecting a special option from the pop-up menu that appears when you right-click on a window's title bar.
Virtual keyboard
- Plasma 6.6 also introduces a new on-screen keyboard (screenshot 4).
Plasma Customization App
- This is the new Plasma initial setup wizard, which creates and configures user accounts separately from the installation process.
- With the Plasma setup app, the technical steps of installing the operating system and partitioning the disk are separated from the user-facing steps, such as setting up an account, connecting to the network, and so on. This provides support for important scenarios such as:
- the work of companies supplying devices with a pre-installed Plasma environment;
- companies or charities that upgrade computers with Plasma to give them a new lease of life;
- transfer or sale of a computer with Plasma installed without providing the new owner with access to the previous owner's data.
But that's not all...
Plasma 6.6 is packed with new features, including:
- the ability to host virtual desktops only on the main screen;
- additional new login manager for Plasma;
- automatic screen brightness control on devices with ambient light sensors;
- using game controllers as regular input devices;
- Installing fonts using the App Center Discover in supported operating systems;
- choosing the priority of a process in System Monitor;
- autonomous controls Web browser и Volume of sound can be locked in the open position;
