Cyberattack on Mitsubishi Electric could lead to leaks of Japanese hypersonic missile specifications

Despite all the efforts of specialists, security holes in the information infrastructure of companies and institutions remain an alarming reality. The scale of the disaster is limited only by the scale of the entities attacked and ranges from the loss of a certain amount of money to problems with national security.

Cyberattack on Mitsubishi Electric could lead to leaks of Japanese hypersonic missile specifications

Today Japanese edition of Asahi Shimbun reportedthat the Japanese Ministry of Defense is investigating a possible leak of specifications for a new advanced missile, which could have occurred during a large-scale cyberattack on Mitsubishi Electric Corp.

According to the Ministry's suspicions, as reported anonymously by Japanese government sources, unknown hackers may have stolen the technical requirements for a hypersonic missile project developed in Japan since 2018. This could be data on the planned range of the missile, its speed, requirements for heat resistance and other parameters related to the country’s missile defense issues.

The terms of reference for the hypersonic missile project were sent to a number of companies, including Mitsubishi Electric. She did not win the tender to create a prototype, but she could have unwittingly leaked the data obtained. The company said it would investigate the report but declined to comment in detail. The Ministry of Defense of Japan also did not comment on the source.

Currently, hypersonic missiles are being tested by the Russian army. The United States and China are engaged in the development of such weapons. Japan is also striving to create missiles that pass through the areas of responsibility of missile defense systems like a knife through butter.
