Chinese OLED will be produced from American materials

One of the oldest and original developers of OLED technologies, the American company Universal Display Corporation (UDC), concluded a multi-year agreement to supply raw materials to a Chinese display manufacturer. The Americans will supply raw materials for OLED production to China Star Optoelectronics Semiconductor Display Technology from Wuhan. It is the second largest panel manufacturer in China. With American supplies, he is ready to move mountains.

Details of the agreement have not been disclosed. UDC will supply the Chinese with raw materials not directly, but through its Irish subsidiary, UDC Ireland Limited. Taking into account the gigantic scope of the Chinese activities in the field of display production, this is a very, very promising business for an American manufacturer.

China Star Optoelectronics was founded less than four years ago, but during this time it managed to start construction second plant for processing 11th generation glass substrates with dimensions of approximately 3370 Γ— 2940 mm (in fact, the lengths of the sides of the substrates may be larger, there is no confirmed data on this matter). No one else in the world was capable of this.

To produce OLED, this Chinese company commissioned a 6th generation glass substrate processing plant. Such substrates are now used to produce small and medium diagonal displays for smartphones and tablets. China Star Optoelectronics also produces flexible OLEDs and hopes that regular and sufficient supplies of UDC raw materials will help it become a leader in the OLED market.

By the way, last spring the South Korean company LG Chem entered into a licensing agreement with UDC’s competitor, DuPont. Using the license of the second American manufacturer of materials for the production of OLED, LG Chem intends to become the largest regional supplier of these raw materials. So UDC had to hurry, because LG Chem’s offer could be more profitable for the Chinese both in price and in terms of logistics costs.
