Chinese developers originally protest against work schedule

Chinese developers and technical specialists began to protest in an original way against too long working hours. They created the 996.ICU repository on GitHub, where they post links and information about their work from 9 am to 9 pm for 6 days a week. Instead of program code, the repository contains many complaints about
leadership of Chinese companies, including Alibaba, Huawei, Bytedance, DJI and
other. Their employees describe all the "charms" of this approach to
business organization.

It all started when an anonymous developer from China posted the project on the Chinese social platform V2EX. According to him, a busy work schedule did not allow him to "rest and communicate with family members."

As noted, the repository can be used by everyone, and not
only from China. In return, they must provide links to posts in
social networks or related news articles proving that
there are violations of labor laws in a particular company. It is recommended not just to take screenshots, but to use utilities like Screen Capture.
At the same time, the creators of the repository warn that users should not
take screenshots of internal documentation and correspondence of companies in order to
avoid problems. At the moment, the popularity of the "project" is sharply
increased, there were versions in English, Hindi, Spanish, Russian,
Gallic, Persian and other languages.

It is alleged that the same Huawei encourages employees to voluntarily forgo paid leave and parental leave, as well as work overtime to receive bonuses to salaries. An article from 2010 is cited as evidence. It also states that in 2006 one of the company's employees died from overwork, and in 2008 two employees committed suicide. There was no official statement from Huawei, but the company has since tame its ardor. This happens in other corporations as well.

The curious thing here is that in Chinese laws there are restrictions on overtime - no more than 3 hours of overtime work per day and no more than 36 hours per month. At the same time, the salary should increase during these periods with a coefficient of 150%. True, there are a lot of ways to get around legislative obstacles. Note that Chinese workers are often not protected by unions because
they are controlled by the Chinese Communist Party and
often play a passive role in helping workers. On the other side,
technicians earn high salaries and often work themselves
overtime on a voluntary basis. Although some complain about
difficult working conditions, many consider this the norm according to local
standards.

Recall that GitHub is owned by Microsoft, but so far the Chinese government has not done anything to block access to the resource. However, such a threat has existed since at least 2013, so it is not a fact that access will continue to be unlimited.
