Chinese flat panel maker BOE will soon surpass LG to become the world's largest

China's state-led BOE Technology Group is expected to overtake South Korea's LG Display as the world's largest flat-panel display manufacturer this year. This is further evidence of China's growing dominance in this area.

BOE, with manufacturing facilities in Beijing and Shenzhen, supplies TV screens to companies such as Sony, Samsung Electronics and Hisense. The company, according to market analysts from IHS Markit, will take 2019% of the global flat panel market in 17,7, which will allow it to surpass LG Display for the first time.

IHS analyst Charles Annis believes that although the company is still playing a catch-up role in terms of cutting-edge flat panel display technology, BOE and China's dominance in the industry has already been established thanks to government policy and financial support. β€œAt this point, even politics and serious trade tensions between the US and China will most likely not change this fact,” he believes.

The report says that until 2011, China's flat-panel manufacturing capacity was negligible, while South Korea accounted for almost half of the global market. But government support helped China quickly raise its stake to 23% as early as 2015. With plans to build even more display factories, IHS Markit estimates that BOE's market share will increase to 2023% in 21, 30% higher than the world's second-largest manufacturer expected.

In recent years, the company has become an important player in the mobile display market, even being included in Apple's supply chain. Incidentally, BOE is also a leading player in flexible displays and a supplier to Huawei, which introduced its Mate X foldable smartphone earlier this year.
