The British Parliament's Defense Committee will review the safety of Huawei's 5G technologies

The UK Parliament's Defense Committee plans to examine security concerns over the use of the 5G mobile network, a group of lawmakers said on Friday in response to pressure from the US and ongoing public concern about the risks of using equipment from Chinese company Huawei.

The British Parliament's Defense Committee will review the safety of Huawei's 5G technologies

In January this year, the government of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson allowed the use of equipment from third-party suppliers, including telecommunications company Huawei, in the construction of non-core sections of fifth-generation (5G) communications networks and fiber optic networks in the country. Thus, the UK went against the will of the United States, which calls for a complete abandonment of equipment from Chinese companies due to possible espionage on the part of the PRC authorities.

Now the safety of using 5G technologies will be the subject of an investigation by a subcommittee of the parliamentary defense committee. One of the participants in the investigation, MP Tobias Ellwood, said that once 5G networks are operational, they will become an β€œintegral” part of British infrastructure. β€œIt is vital that when discussing new technology we ask difficult questions about the potential for abuse,” he said on his Twitter account.

Huawei Vice President Victor Zhang said in an emailed statement that the company would work with the committee to answer all questions. β€œOver the past 18 months, the government and two parliamentary committees have carefully assessed the facts and concluded that there is no basis to prevent Huawei from supplying 5G equipment on cybersecurity grounds,” he added.
