Commercial 5G network in South Korea: 260 users in the first month

In early April, three South Korean telecom operators, led by SK Telecom, launched the country's first commercial 5G network. Now it is reported that 260 customers have started using the new service over the past month, which is certainly a good result for fifth-generation cellular technology. This was stated by representatives of the Ministry of Science and Information Technology of South Korea, who coordinated the actions of telecom operators at the time of the launch of the 000G network.

Commercial 5G network in South Korea: 260 users in the first month

South Korea's desire to begin commercial use of fifth-generation communications networks as quickly as possible has led to early adopters encountering a number of problems when working with 5G. Unstable signal, variable speed, as well as an insufficient number of smartphones with 5G support - all this prevented telecom operators from achieving more impressive results at the initial stage. Telecom operators try to quickly resolve emerging problems, offer customers favorable conditions and hold promotions, thereby trying to maintain interest in the new service among the public.

First of all, it was not possible to ensure a high level of quality for the new service due to the lack of a sufficient number of 5G base stations. Currently, 54 base stations supporting operation in 200G networks have been put into operation in South Korea. Compared to last week, the number of base stations increased by 5%, which could not but affect the improvement in the quality of coverage. First of all, telecom operators intend to expand 7G networks to large cities, after which the technology will cover the entire territory of the country within two years.

It is known that at the initial stage, telecom operators experienced a shortage of base stations supplied by Nokia. In addition, in terms of performance, Nokia's 5G stations are inferior to equipment from competing manufacturers. Ultimately, areas where Nokia equipment was used were excluded from the 5G coverage map. Currently, operators are expecting additional supplies of Samsung base stations, which will be used in the future.
