Despite the explosive growth of the semiconductor industry in the Asia-Pacific region and, in particular, in China, American companies continue to hold over half of the world market among semiconductor developers. And Americans do not experience any imbalance. Everything they have is approximately equal: both factoryless companies and developers with their own factories.
IC insights analysts
American companies are followed by South Korean companies, which, at the end of 2019, owned 21% of the global integrated circuit market. There are few factoryless developers in the Republic of Korea. Samsung and SK Hunix are IDM companies with their own powerful factories. Note: due to the decrease in memory prices in 2019, the share of South Korean manufacturers in the global market in 2019 fell by 6%.
In Taiwan, there is a sharp bias towards factoryless developers, as in China. There are few of their "designer houses" on the island and on the mainland. In Europe and Japan, the opposite is true: there are many developers with their own production facilities, but there are almost no factoryless designers. Against the background of all other regions, the structure of the US semiconductor sector looks like a bulwark of stability.
As for the dynamics of sales in the global semiconductor market, for the year the revenue of companies, one way or another connected with the design of solutions, decreased by 15%. Only China showed annual growth (+10%), while South Korea showed the most significant decrease - by 32%. But it's all memory, which in 2019 quickly fell in price.
Let's add that for this year the forecasts for the semiconductor market are still positive. The impact of the pandemic is not yet considered a critical factor to start sharply reducing forecasts.
