Canonical launches Ubuntu as a replacement for CentOS

Canonical has launched a campaign to promote Ubuntu as a replacement for CentOS on servers used in the infrastructure of financial services companies. The initiative is due to Red Hat's decision to stop releasing updates for the classic CentOS 31 from December 2021, 8 in favor of the CentOS Stream test project.

While Red Hat Enterprise Linux and CentOS have established a strong presence in the financial services sector, fundamental changes to CentOS could push financial services companies to rethink their operating system decisions. Among the points that are mentioned in attempts to push the financial services industry to migrate from CentOS to Ubuntu:

  • Predictable release schedule.
  • Enterprise-level support with 10-year updates, non-restart kernel update service and SLA.
  • High performance and versatility.
  • Security and certification of the cryptographic stack for compliance with FIPS 140-2 Level 1 requirements.
  • Suitable for use in private and public cloud systems.
  • Kubernetes support. Delivery to Google GKE, Microsoft AKS and Amazon EKS CAAS as a reference platform for Kubernetes.
