Lenovo launches laptops with Fedora preinstalled

The Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 8 laptop is now available for pre-installed Fedora. Two more models will be added soon (ThinkPad P53 and ThinkPad P1 Gen2).

Lenovo also offered a special discount to members of the Fedora project. You can read about how to get it in community blog.

So far, the offer is valid in the United States and Canada, but will be expanded in the near future.

It is worth noting separately that the system preinstalled on laptops is a stock Fedora 32 Workstation without any patches or blobs from the vendor. While working on the project, Lenovo engineers made it their goal to ensure that all the necessary patches were accepted into the corresponding upstream projects and successfully coped with this task.

Unfortunately, it is precisely because of this feature that laptops with Fedora most likely will not appear on the Russian market. According to Russian legislation in order to sell equipment with pre-installed applications on the territory of Russia, it is also necessary to pre-install additional software from the list determined by the Russian side. Although the list itself has not yet been approved, and its applicability to Linux-based operating systems is unclear, legally this requirement is contrary to the agreements between Lenovo and the Fedora project and cannot be met.
