Mozilla announces layoffs of 250 employees

Mozilla Company reported on a significant reduction in staff and the closure of the representative office in Taipei (Taiwan). Approximately 250 employees will be fired from the company, and about 60 employees will be transferred to other teams. Given that the company employs approximately 900 people, layoffs will affect about 30% of the staff. The key reason for the reduction is the desire to stay afloat in the context of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is notedthat, realizing the importance of the old model, which implies the distribution of free services, in the current conditions, the company is forced to start looking at other business opportunities and alternative values. It is necessary to develop a business model that will allow achieving an optimal balance between social and public benefits and opportunities for generating business benefits.

Among the areas that the company will focus on is the development of new products that will provide additional sources of income. First of all, it is planned to invest in such services as Pocket, VPN, hubs, Web Assembly, and security and privacy related products. In addition, new Design and UX teams and Machine Learning teams will be created to support these products.

Firefox will continue to be a flagship product, but its development will focus on user experience, at the cost of reducing investment in features such as web developer tools, internal tooling, and platform enhancements. Related capabilities related to security and privacy will be transferred to the "Products and Operations team", responsible for the development of new products. The company's methods of interaction with the community will also be reviewed, aimed at more actively attracting volunteers.
