Nokia relicensed Plan9 OS under MIT license

Nokia, which in 2015 acquired Alcatel-Lucent, which owned the Bell Labs research center, announced the transfer of all intellectual property related to the Plan 9 project to the Plan 9 Foundation, a nonprofit organization that will oversee the further development of Plan 9. At the same time, the publication of the Plan9 code is announced. under the MIT permissive license in addition to the Lucent Public License and GPLv2 that the code was previously distributed under.

The main idea behind Plan 9 is to blur the distinction between local and remote resources. The system is a distributed environment based on three basic principles: all resources can be viewed as a hierarchical set of files; there is no difference in access to local and external resources; each process has its own mutable namespace. The 9P protocol is used to create a single distributed hierarchy of resource files. The classic Plan9 codebase continued to be developed by the 9front and 9legacy communities, which formed ready-made builds for use on modern hardware.
