Nokia launches SR Linux network operating system

Nokia has unveiled a next-generation network operating system for data centers called Nokia Service Router Linux (SR Linux). The development was carried out in alliance with Apple, which has already announced the start of using the new OS from Nokia in its cloud solutions.

Key elements of Nokia SR Linux:

  • runs on standard Linux operating system;
  • compatible with any hardware;
  • built on the basis of the Internet protocol, which is used in the operating system for high-load Nokia Service Router Operating System (SROS) network routers installed on more than 1 million devices worldwide;
  • uses a microservices architecture, supports model-based management, streaming of detailed telemetry, and modern interfaces such as gRPC (remote procedure call) and protobuf;
  • the NetOps Development Kit (NDK) is a comprehensive programming toolkit with rich functionality;
