SUSE announces acquisition of Rancher Labs

SUSE, which last year restored the status of an independent company, announced about buying a company Rancher Labs, engaged in development of Operating System Rancher OS for isolated containers, distributed storage Longhorn, Kubernetes distributions RKE (Rancher Kubernetes Engine) and k3s (Lightweight Kubernetes), as well as a toolkit for managing container infrastructure based on Kubernetes.

Details of the deal were not disclosed, but according to unofficial information the transaction amount ranged from 600 to 700 million dollars. A detailed plan for integrating Rancher Labs technologies into SUSE products will be released following regulatory approval of the transaction. It is notedthat the business model will remain the same and continue to be built around the development of completely open source software and not being tied to one vendor. Rancher products will continue to support multiple operating systems and Kubernetes distributions, including Google GKE, Amazon EKS, Microsoft AKS, and Gardener.

Recall that Rancher Labs founded several notable Citrix developers and former executives Cloud.com. The RancherOS code is written in the Go language and spreads under the Apache license. RancherOS provides a minimal bundle that only includes the components needed to run isolated containers. The update is performed atomically at the level of replacing entire containers. According to the tasks to be solved, the system resembles projects Atomic и CoreOS, but differs from the systemd system manager in favor of its own init system, built directly on top of the Docker toolkit.
