Valve has released a new version of the Proton 9.0-4 project, based on the Wine project codebase and aimed at ensuring the launch in Linux gaming applications created for Windows and presented in the Steam catalog. The project's work is distributed under the BSD license.
Proton allows you to directly launch in Linux-Steam client game applications supplied only for WindowsThe package includes an implementation of DirectX 9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), working through the translation of DirectX calls to the Vulkan API. It provides improved support for game controllers and the ability to use full-screen mode regardless of the screen resolutions supported in games. To improve the performance of multi-threaded games, the "esync" (Eventfd Synchronization) and "futex/fsync" mechanisms are supported.
Among the changes in the new version of Proton:
- The DXVK layer that translates calls to the Vulkan API has been updated to branch 2.5.
- VKD3D-Proton, a fork of vkd3d created by Valve to improve Direct3D 12 support in Proton, has been updated to version 2.13-241. vkd3d-shader is imported from vkd3d 1.14.
- The Dxvk-nvapi package with the implementation of the NVAPI library on top of DXVK has been updated to version 0.7.1-94.
- The Wine Mono engine with .NET platform implementation has been updated to release 9.3.1.

With insufficient values of vm.max_map_count, problems with the launch and performance of games that consume memory intensively may occur.
