Konami will re-release the old parts of Contra and Castlevania on consoles and PC in honor of its 50th anniversary

On March 21, the Japanese company Konami will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary. On the occasion of the anniversary, she announced three collections of her classic games: Castlevania: Anniversary Collection, Contra: Anniversary Collection and Konami Anniversary Collection: Arcade Classics. All of them will be released in 2019 on PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch and will cost $20 each.

The first - on April 18 - will be a collection of classics from slot machines. Buyers will receive eight games, seven of which belong to different sub-genres of the shooter: A-Jax or, as it is known in Europe, Typhoon (1987), TwinBee (1985), Thunder Cross (1987), Gradius (1985) and its sequel Gradius 2 (1988), whose arcade versions outside of Japan were released as Nemesis and Vulcan Venture respectively, Life Force (1986), known in the Land of the Rising Sun as Salamander, and Scramble (1981). The eighth platformer will be Haunted Castle (1988), an adaptation of the first part of Castlevania, which was promoted in the West as a separate project.

Two other compilations are promised in early summer. The classic Castlevania collection will include eight games, of which only four have been named so far: the original Castlevania (1986), Castlevania 2: Belmont's Revenge (1991), Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse (1989) and Super Castlevania 4 (1991). The first and third originally went on sale for the NES, the second is a Game Boy and Game Boy Color exclusive, and the fourth is only available on the SNES.

Contra: Anniversary Collection will also offer eight games. So far, Konami has confirmed that these will include the original Contra (1987), Super Contra (1988), Operation C (1991), known as Contra in Japan and Probotector in the PAL region, and Contra 3: The Alien Wars (1992 ). The first two were originally released for arcades, and later appeared on other platforms (including NES and MS-DOS). Super C was released only on the Game Boy and Game Boy Color, while the third part started on the SNES and subsequently moved to the Game Boy.

In recent years, Konami has been focusing on mobile platforms and arcades, and major additions to the Castlevania and Contra series are yet to come. The last major installment in the vampire hunter series, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, was released in 2014 on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Contra ended even earlier, in 2011, with the release of Hard Corps: Uprising for seventh generation consoles.
