Santa hat display conflict in Visual Studio Code open editor

Microsoft was forced block access to the bug tracking system of the open code editor for a day Visual Studio Code due to a conflict informally dubbed "SantaGate". The conflict erupted after a change in the settings access button, which on Christmas Eve was placed a Santa Claus hat. One of the users demanded remove the Christmas image, as it is a religious symbol and is perceived by him as an insult.

Microsoft company apologized and replaced the image with a snowflake, after which a storm of indignation arose in the Visual Studio Code bug tracker that Microsoft gave in to the demand of a troll or a fanatic, despite the fact that in the modern world Santa Claus has nothing to do with religion and mentioned in the complaint comparing a Santa Claus hat with a swastika looks like trolling or inappropriate behavior.

A heated discussion broke out, in which supporters of various religious beliefs, as well as adherents and opponents of "Easter eggs" in the code, wedged in. Complaints began to come in that removing the Santa Claus hat and making changes due to the opinion of one social justice activist (SJW) is perceived as an insult. Some tried to make the situation absurd and mentioned that writing code in English can be perceived as an imposition of Western imperialism, and the snowflake alludes to racial differences.

Since many of the comments clearly violated the Microsoft Code of Conduct, access to the bug tracking system was temporarily closed and the posts were purged. After evaluating the situation, Microsoft took a compromise solution - the ability to change the appearance of the button has been added to the settings (more than 10 festive options are offered in the list).
