Atari VCS console will switch to AMD Ryzen and will be delayed until the end of 2019

Before cryptocurrencies hit the headlines, the biggest trend in the modern world was the growth of platforms and micro-investment projects. This made it possible to realize many dreams, although a considerable number of people were deprived not only of aspirations, but also of money. However, some crowdfunding projects last too long. One of those is the Atari VCS game console, which is once again being delayed a few months to, according to Atari, significantly upgrade the specifications of the PC-based game console.

This makes sense - when the Atari VCS hit the news in 2017 under the name Ataribox, it was designed around an AMD Bristol Bridge processor. Even in 2017, it was hardly a gaming computer (there is nothing to say about modernity). Launching such a product in 2019 would certainly undermine the credibility of both Atari and AMD.

A lot has happened since then, and AMD has upgraded its processors, moving the CPU architecture to Zen and the GPU to Vega. With that in mind, it's only fitting that Atari should indeed switch to a new, yet-to-be-announced, dual-core Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon Vega graphics. This 14nm processor has yet to be named, but Atari says more details will be available before the console launches in about nine months.

Atari also promises improved cooling, quieter operation and increased performance thanks to the new processor. The AMD chip will also offer support for 4K video playback and DRM technologies. Unfortunately, all this led to a delay in the launch of the system from spring to autumn, and possibly even winter.

While Atari has said the change won't affect the manufacturing process, it will affect everything else, including certification and of course software. Thus, the Atari VCS project, which began in 2017, will not appear on the US market until the end of 2019 - the rest of the world will have to wait even longer.
