OASIS Consortium Approves OpenDocument 1.3 as Standard

The international consortium OASIS, which develops and promotes open standards, has approved the final version of the OpenDocument 1.3 specification (ODF) as an OASIS standard. The next step will be the promotion of OpenDocument 1.3 as an international ISO/IEC standard.

ODF is an XML-based, application and platform independent file format for storing documents containing text, spreadsheets, charts, and graphics. The specifications also include requirements for the organization of reading, writing and processing such documents in applications. The ODF standard is applicable for creating, editing, viewing, sharing, and archiving documents, which can be text documents, presentations, spreadsheets, bitmap graphics, vector graphics, diagrams, and other types of content.

The most notable innovations in OpenDocument 1.3 are:

  • Implemented tools to ensure the protection of documents, such as certification of a document with a digital signature and encryption of content using OpenPGP keys;
  • Added support for polynomial and moving average regression types for charts;
  • Implemented additional methods for formatting digits in numbers;
  • Added a separate type of headers and footers for the main page;
  • The means of paragraph indentation depending on the context are defined;
  • Suggested additional arguments for the WEEKDAY function;
  • Expanded options for tracking changes in documents;
  • Added a new template type for body text in documents.

The specification consists of four parts:

  • Part 1, introduction;
  • Part 2 describes the model for packing data into an ODF container;
  • Part 3, describes the general scheme of ODF.
  • Part 4, defines the format for describing OpenFormula formulas
