LibreOffice 7.0 Gets Skia-Based Rendering

During the development of LibreOffice 7.0, one of the main changes was the use of the Skia library from Google, as well as support for Vulkan rendering. This library is used for UI rendering and text rendering. The feature works on Windows and Linux. macOS has not yet been announced.

LibreOffice 7.0 Gets Skia-Based Rendering

According to Luboš Luňák of Collabora, the code based on Cairo is unnecessarily complex. Using Skia is easier, even with a patch that requires Skia to use FcPattern for font selection.

Skia's Linux and Windows text rendering is said to be in need of work, so it's not clear if that method will be the default in LibreOffice 7.0, which will be released in early August. It is possible that this will remain an option, although this may change in the future.

In general, many improvements are expected in the seventh version. Among them, fast XLSX processing, performance improvements, HiDPI scaling support for Qt5, and improvements in terms of the user interface are announced. Thus, the best free office suite continues to evolve.

Earlier came out version 6.3, which received improvements in terms of working with proprietary formats. It will be supported until May 29, 2020.
