Mom, I'm on TV: how was the final of the "Digital Breakthrough" contest

What happens if you leave 3000+ IT people of various stripes in one huge territory? Our participants broke 26 mice, set a Guinness record and destroyed one and a half tons of chak-chak (maybe they should have claimed another record). Two weeks have passed since the final of the Digital Breakthrough - we remember how it was and sum up the main results.

The final of the competition was held in Kazan from September 27 to 29 at Kazan Expo, where just a month ago the world's best specialists competed in various disciplines at the World Skills Championship.

Vladislav Faustov, Ficus team (winner in the nomination of the Ministry of Construction): “I was impressed by the Kazan-Expo exhibition complex, where the hackathon was held. An interesting feeling when at night (the guests are gone, the hackathoners are sleeping or working) in slippers and shorts you walk through the vast spaces past the empty stands of Megafon, Rostelecom and other partners of the event. It's like being locked up in a mall as a child. I was also surprised by the reconfigurable halls and meeting rooms (those who played Portal will understand what I'm talking about)".

3500 (that's 650 teams) participants from all over Russia came to the site. And our hackathon is almost 200 experts, 120 jury members, 106 winners, 48 hours of work, 26 nominations, 10 million prize fund, 3 audiences (schoolchildren, students and finalists of the regional stage). It is said that someone even saw a tyrannosaurus rex, a smurf and a pikachu. These are:

By the way, these costumes are not animators (as you might think), but members of the Pika pika team, which worked in the Rostelecom nomination. This masquerade relieved the atmosphere of hard coding - no one was ready to miss people in such bright clothes and not take a photo with them.

And here is another character that could be found in the corridors of Kazan Expo:

Who participated in the hackathon:

  • teams of schoolchildren from the Republic of Tatarstan
  • teams of students of technical specialties from all over Russia
  • teams of finalists of the regional stages (these are 40 hackathons in June and July)

We know that some were confused by the wording of the tasks. To make it clear what problems arose, we asked the teams about it.

Andrey Pavlenko from the One Step Away From Deadline team: “I don’t know how it was in other tracks, but in ours the task was set as clearly as possible, although this did not stop us from thinking creatively and adding new functionality, thinking about variations of what was requested.”

Kirill Skosyrev, AVM team: “The thoughtfulness of the tasks, of course, was not ideal. At least in our track: the task was to develop software for augmented reality glasses, but, unfortunately, there was no equipment for testing. Nevertheless, we got out of the situation and solved the problem on our own - we are entrepreneurs :)”.

Vitaly Savenkov, Black Pixel team (winner in the nomination of the Ministry of Health): “We have significantly expanded the functionality of the prototype with our developments from the regional semi-finals. Formally, the terms of reference required the creation of a service for monitoring the general condition of personnel when working at a computer. By pre-defense, we had a workable prototype of a system not only for analyzing the state, but also for preventing various diseases and monitoring the effectiveness of their treatment. Therefore, even if the wording is not entirely clear, it is possible to work with it.”

Vladislav Faustov, Ficus team: “Out of 20 nominations, we immediately chose those where the task was more or less transparently formulated. Some were too simple, but it is not entirely clear what exactly they want. Somewhere it is clear what they want, but the challenge is clearly not for a hackathon. We settled on the golden mean, so that there was less competition, and so that the task was tough. In any case, the wording of the task that we receive is just a name, followed by a TOR without any specifics. It will be great if next time, in addition to the TK, the participants will be given a guide on this topic, because I want to spend time on the product, and not on “Google”. At least minimal background information and approximate data arrays would have a very positive effect on the result. It was quite difficult for us to get into the sphere of construction and housing and communal services in two days, but everything seemed to work out :)”.

By the way, we received a lot of feedback and indignation that they evaluated everyone opaquely and generally did not understand anything - we will devote the next post to this issue and tell you everything.

Capturing moments

Our youngest participant, Amir Risaev, turned 13 on the opening day of the hackathon. What kind of parties did you have at school? Instead of a boring gathering in celebratory triangular caps, he received congratulations from the First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Sergei Kiriyenko, and also "bathed" in enthusiastic applause from the audience.

By the way, Amir himself (despite his age) is no longer a child's life. He studies at the University of Talents of the Republic of Tatarstan, and has been fond of programming and robotics since elementary school. She still manages to learn Chinese and go to the pool.

Next to him is our oldest participant and part-time star and "ambassador" of the competition - Evgeny Polishchuk.

Participants of the main, “adult” hackathon worked in two large huge halls on the first floor, schoolchildren worked in specially equipped halls on the second. Downstairs, we also prepared a gaming area - with red bull blackjack, jenga and rock.

The second day the teams worked under the strict supervision of the commission of the Guinness Book of Records. You and I understand that a well-fed IT specialist is an effective IT specialist, but Guinness did not care about this - sit and code for 12 hours. I had to get out and feed everyone right at the workplace.

Several teams told about their survival secrets, which had their own life hacks for productive work, even when “in tight quarters, but not offended.”

Kirill Skosyrev, AVM team: “At the hackathon, the motivation to win and the feeling of fierce competition kept me in good shape. Well, during the working day, they were supported by energy drinks and coffee, like everyone else. Working without sleep was not our goal. We are for rest and healthy sleep. But on the second day, to be honest, there was an understanding that not everyone has time. Therefore, my wife and I slept for a couple of hours in order to be on defense at least without bags under our eyes, but the developers did not sleep at all.

Mom, I'm on TV: how was the final of the "Digital Breakthrough" contest

Vladislav Faustov, Ficus team: “From our team, everyone slept for about 2-3 hours every night. Someone relaxed at the workplace (there were ottomans near each table), someone in the recreation room - there, by the way, there were not only sleep simulators (sofas), but also for sports activities. Basketball, ping-pong, kicker (table football), big jenga, climbing wall - all this was at our disposal. When we realized that we were mentally tired, we went to throw the ball into the ring.

One of the most important factors for survival and further victory is provisions. Meals were organized for the participants in the canteen, but there was not always time for them, and sometimes the food ran out. Therefore, it was necessary to replenish the stocks of buns. snacks, drinking water and more. In our hall not far from us there were snacks, tea, and sometimes energy drinks.

Another secret of success, which they realized only later, was that we sat closest to the toilet. This meant that our team saved time on trips back and forth. Quick tips for survival: take the best strategic spots, eat and drink more and feel free to go to the toilet, during a 48-hour hackathon, the optimal sleep is 3 + 2 hours, sometimes warm up.

On the third day in the morning, the teams went to pre-defense. All those who successfully passed this stage were admitted to the final defenses and the fight for the main prize, honor, glory, respect and "mamayanateleke".

And, yes, we made Guinness! Became the largest hackathon in the world, breaking last year's record of Saudi Arabia. By link you can watch the video of how it was solemnly (goosebumps!) announced to us on stage by the chief judge of the Guinness Book of Records.

Marat Nabbiulin, goAI team (winner in the nomination from MTS): “The Digital Breakthrough Competition is a Big History that we have touched. It became a crucible for our team, it allowed us to gain invaluable experience in quickly finding solutions and creating a valuable product. Thanks from the whole team to those who came up with and brought this idea to life. Thanks to the organizers for their care, for the experts, for the travel and excellent food. Thanks to them for organizing the Guinness World Record. Thanks to the opposing teams for their perseverance and will to win. The story doesn't end there. This is just the end of the first part.".

26 teams became the winners of the first season of the competition - now they have to finalize prototypes in the pre-accelerator under the guidance of mentors and experts from partner companies. With them, 34 more teams will be upgraded, which received positive ratings from our expert jury.

Only registered users can participate in the survey. Sign in, you are welcome.

It will be interesting to read about the pre-accelerator? What do we teach, how do we torment and bring projects to a market product?
