Tons of missing features Photoshop for iPad will get after launch

Adobe has already revealed a wide range of updates to Photoshop for iPad when the long-awaited app launches in 2019. Over time, the company plans to bring the iPadOS version to the same functionality as its desktop counterpart for Windows and macOS.

Bloomberg recently announced that Photoshop for iPad would be coming with a lot of missing features. Suffice it to say that the app will not support brush libraries, smart objects, RAW editing, layer styles, color spaces along with much more. Any Photoshop user knows that these tools are really important in most professional workflows. Users who participated in beta testing of the iPad app have already shared their concerns that the lack of these features makes it difficult to fully use the software.

But Daring Fireball wrote that Adobe is well aware of the shortcomings of the first version of Photoshop for the iPad and plans to quickly add features to the program: “Several reliable sources have reported that Adobe is serious about bringing a full version of Photoshop to the iPad. They see a graphics editor for tablets as a serious project created for creative professionals. The team of engineers working on the app has grown significantly since last year, and they plan to add features very aggressively while refining the details of Photoshop's touch interface."

The application uses the same basic engine as its desktop counterpart. Bringing it to the iPad means the base is ready and the functionality can be expanded with minimal complexity. Adobe has never committed to launching Photoshop on the iPad with all the features of its desktop counterpart. High expectations were due to early reports and rumors from Bloomberg about this version of the graphics editor. Either way, it's good that Adobe is taking the Photoshop for iPad project seriously and considering it one of its top apps for the future.

Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman also tweeted: “Adobe has notified Photoshop for iPad testers that a number of features will be coming later (confirming the limited functionality of the first version): canvas rotation, shapes and paths, custom brushes and fonts, color swatches, curve controls, smart objects, grids and guides, and much more.”

Photoshop for iPad was announced last year when Apple released the updated iPad Pro. Performance during the presentation was simply amazing and pointed to a new era of productivity on the iPad. Since then, users have been waiting to see if the app would see the light of day and see if it would be powerful enough to get at least some professionals actively using the tool in their work.
