Matrix receives another $8.5 million in funding

Matrix is a free protocol for implementing a federated network based on a linear history of events (events) within an acyclic graph (DAG).

Earlier protocol received $5 million from Status.im in 2017, which allowed developers to stabilize the specification, client and server reference implementations, hire UI/UX professionals to work on a global redesign, and significantly improve end-to-end encryption.

Thereafter cooperation was established with the government authorities of Francewho needed a secure means for internal communications.

This time around, MessageLabs, lastminute.com and Dawn have joined in the funding and will focus development on:

  • enable encryption for private conversations by default;
  • implementation second version of communities instead of the first recognized as unsuccessful;
  • implementing mechanisms to prevent spam and vandalism;
  • reference server optimizations in Python (Synapse) and/or server development in Go (dendrite);
  • "real" personal dialogues;
    • The current implementation of private messages is a regular room from which you can leave and not return, invite third-party users. In the new implementation, there will be a single "canonical" room for each contact, which can be re-entered.
  • expandable profiles;
  • decentralized accounts (nomadic identity);
  • message branching.
