MediaTek will not mediate between Huawei and TSMC to circumvent US sanctions

Recently, due to a new package of US sanctions, Huawei lost the ability to place orders at TSMC facilities. Since then, various rumors have arisen about how the Chinese tech giant could find alternatives, and turning to MediaTek has been cited as a viable option. But now MediaTek has officially denied some of the claims that the company could help Huawei circumvent the new US rules.

For those unaware, a Japanese news agency recently suggested that MediaTek could supply Huawei with TSMC-made chips by acting as an intermediary. The chip maker will allegedly buy chips from TSMC and rebrand them as their own and sell them to Huawei. MediaTek has now officially denied this claim and offered clarification on the matter.

According to a company spokeswoman, MediaTek will not violate any laws or circumvent the rules of supplying TSMC chips to Huawei. The report is called false: the chipmaker is committed to complying with relevant global trade laws and regulations. In other words, the company will not enter into special contracts with Huawei or bypass normal practices for any of its customers.

But while MediaTek will not buy chips made specifically for Huawei from TSMC, it is expected to supply its own SoCs to the Chinese company, claiming to be its leading supplier. Huawei is currently in negotiations with MediaTek to supply 5G chips. HiSilicon Kirin processors were present in 80% of Huawei smartphones, but this could soon change radically if the company bets on Dimensity 5G. Various reports have reported special deals and large order placements, although nothing has yet been officially confirmed.
